National Chief Executive

Martin (Marty) Thomas 

Martin Thomas is the National Chief Executive at Scouts Australia's National Office at Chatswood in Sydney. During his career, he has held a number of senior management positions including Company Director, CEO and board member. Prior to being appointed to this National role he completed three years as the Executive Manager of Scouts Western Australia and 18 months as the Executive Manager of Scouts Victoria. This has given him incredible insight into Scouting at a Branch level.

With a detailed understanding of finance, Martin has had significant input into developing financial structures and strategies. He has extensive experience in fundraising, risk management, corporate governance, constitutional issues and marketing, and has been involved in developing the Scouts Australia Strategic plan. Martin enjoys networking and promoting Scouting to community organisations, businesses and the government and is a member of a number of not for profit organisations.

Over the last 23 years Martin has gained extensive knowledge of Scouting at a national and world level and has represented Scouts Australia at a number of International Scouting events, including World and Asia-Pacific Conferences. The highlight of his international experience was attending the 2011 World Scout Conference in Brazil. 

Martin’s most senior volunteer appointment was a five year term as Chief Commissioner of Western Australia and is currently a volunteer Trainer working with Scouting Commissioners and Group Leaders.

Martin's Scouting knowledge coupled with over 30 years of senior management experience working in the private sector has provided him with a unique set of skills, knowledge as well as the passion required to undertake such a significant and exciting role as the National Chief Executive for Scouts Australia. In addition, his inclusive management style and highly developed leadership skills will empower his team to achieve their operational goals in supporting senior Scouting volunteers. Recognising the value of individuals and their importance to the success of the organisation, Martin understands the need to create a proactive work environment where each person can develop their full potential.

Martin is married to Cheryl and has four children, all of whom have been involved in Scouting. In his spare time he enjoys sailing, camping and cycling.
