National Youth Council Chair
Ms. Chris Neilsen
The current National Youth Council Chair is Chris Neilsen. Chris began her Scouting career at the age of six, with the Marla Joey Mob at 6th Ringwood Scout Group. She's never left that hall, now called 1st Maroondah Scout Group, and spends half her week there, as a member of the Lasseter Rover Crew and as "Matkah", the Assistant Cub Leader. Chris has earned all of the major awards during her time at Scouting, except the BP, which she is now working towards.
Chris is currently undertaking a Master of Environment at The University of Melbourne, having completed her Bachelor of Science in 2011. She is an avid debater; plays both the clarinet and saxophone; and regularly corrects erroneous apostrophes. In 2008 Chris took a gap year between high school and university and headed to Qingdao, China to teach Conversational English.
Chris joined the National Youth Council in 2010 (having been rejected twice! So keep applying!!) and became Minute Secretary in her first year. In 2011 she was elected as Vice Chair, and in 2012, became Chair. In 2010 she applied to be an observer at the World Scout Youth Forum and World Scout Conference and was selected, heading to Brazil in January 2011 with 4 other Australian Rovers. She again represented Australia at the Commonwealth Scout Youth Forum, London, in April 2012. Perhaps the biggest highlight of this for Chris was seeing the Queen in real life and getting to shake Bear Gryll's hand!
To contact Chris about anything or if you would like to submit an item for the Youth E-News, please e-mail her on nyc.chair@scouts.com.au.
