“Scouting taught us resilience, independence and teamwork.”
- Jon Faine
Known for his provocative and probing debate, quick wit and willingness to ask the stickiest of questions, Jon Faine delivers thought-provoking radio. As host of 774 ABC Melbourne’s Morning program, Jon investigates the issues and stories affecting Melbourne with energy and vigour - all without taking life too seriously.
Jon was a Member of 3rd St Kilda Scouts and Venturers from 1968 to 1973, and believes the resilience, independence and teamwork he learnt through Scouting are values that have stood him in good stead throughout life.
“My friend at school, Robert Joseph, invited me and I went along and loved it,” Jon said. “The Jamboree at Leppington was a highlight, and the annual long camping trip, but the weekly meetings were the highlight of my routine.”
Jon went on to become a lawyer. After seven years in the legal profession, he entered radio broadcasting in 1989 to produce and present Radio National's Law Report. He then presented 3LO's Morning and Afternoon programs, worked on ABC TV's Investigators, First Edition and Wise UP and has been presenting the Morning program on 774 ABC Melbourne since 1997.
Enjoying high ratings peaking in September 2002, he was found to be Victoria's top talk-show host (AC Nielsen survey). In 2003 he received the ABC Local Radio 'Broadcaster of the Year' award.
His hobbies are cuckoo clocks and old cars, and in 2008 he and his son Jack undertook an epic six-month adventure during which they drove from Melbourne to London. (Yes, that’s right… drove!) Check out the blog and photos at melbournetolondon.com.
And finally, what words of wisdom does Jon have to offer today’s youth?
“Don’t make the same mistakes we did,” he said.
