Wood Badge Training Program - Overview

As in most National Scout Organisations, Scouts Australia operates a Wood Badge Training Program as a system for the training and development of all its Adult Leaders. It comprises Introductory, Basic and Advanced Levels which are proficiency based and relate to the specific functions of each type of Leader. Additional training programs enhance the acquisition of further skills and knowledge.

Scouts Australia’s Wood Badge Training Program conforms to the requirements of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM).

 

Wood Badge Training Program - Introductory Level

The Introductory Level comprises an Induction Module. Content relates to the specific roles selected and comprises membership responsibilities, fundamentals of Scouting, religious obligations, basic skills and the needs of young people.
 
Scout competencies at the Introductory Level include:
  • Overview of Scouting
  • Mutual Agreement
  • Code of Conduct
  • Initial Competency Check
  • Duty of Care
 
Subject to Branch membership procedures they will also be eligible to receive a Certificate of Membership.
 

 

Wood Badge Training Program - Basic Level

The Basic Level comprises of e-Learning, in-service activities, practical supplement and general on the job experience. Participants are assigned a mentor known as a Personal Leader Adviser to guide them through this training. An outline of the training at a Basic Level is offered below: 

e-Learning:

  • Basic Core Module:
    • Introduction to Basic Leadership Training
    • How Scouting began
    • Basic Scouting fundamentals
    • Unique, special and peculiar for Scouting
    • Basic Leadership
    • Personal Skill Development
    • Introduction to the Patrol System
    • Basic Scoutsafe
    • Basic Work Health and Safety
    • Basic Childsafe Environments
  • Basic Sectional Techniques Module (aligned to the relevant aspects of the Section):
    • Basic Sectional Knowledge
    • Basic Programming
    • Basic Organisational Management
    • Basic Outdoors and the Environment
    • Basic Sectional e-Learning Supplements
  • Basic Outdoor Skills

Face to Face:

  • In-service Training
    •  Placement for a period of 6-8 weeks with another aligned Section to experience Leadership in practice.
  • Basic Practical Supplement (aligned to the relevant aspects of the Section)
    • A one weekend or equivalent applying skills learned in a facilitated practical environment
    • Basic Outdoor Skills practical (Scout, Venturer Scout and Rover Scout Sections mandatory only)

 

On completion of Basic Level training, Leaders receive:

  • Certificate of Adult Leadership
  • Gilwell woggle

Subject to Branch membership procedures they will also be eligible to receive a Certificate of Appointment. 

 

 

Wood Badge Training Program - Advanced Level

Advanced Level training builds on the skills and knowledge gained during Basic Level training and the opportunity to have applied this learning in a practical environment. Advanced training comprises of e-Learning, a practical supplement and a project. Again a mentor may be assigned to support the person progressing through this level of training.

An outline of the content of training at the Advanced Level is offered below:

 e-Learning:

  • Advanced Core Module:
    • Advanced Leadership Training
    • Advanced Scouting Fundamentals
    • Advanced Personal Skill Development
    • Programming for Personal Growth
    • Advanced Scoutsafe
    • Grow Your Group
    • World Scouting and Cultural Diversity
  • Advanced Sectional Techniques Module (assigned to the relevant aspects of the Section):
    • Advanced Organisation Management

Face to Face:

  • Advanced Practical Supplement (aligned to the relevant aspects of the Section):
    • A one weekend or equivalent developing advanced skills in leadership and personal development
Project:
  • Leveraging assignments completed during the course of Advanced Learning, a project of approximately 10 hours will be initiated with a specific aim and goals for achievement. This will be reviewed by the participant’s Team Leader as part of the final Wood Badge Evaluation step.
 

On completion of Advanced Level training, Leaders receive:

  • Wood Badge and Parchment
  • International membership of 1st Gilwell Park Scout Group evidenced by the issuing of the Gilwell Scarf

 

Wood Badge Training Program – Additional Training

Additional training for Scouts Australia members includes:

  • Supplementary programs for members of Committees
  • Elective Training is offered through the e-Learning platform and other practical based experiences (usually a minimum of three hours) as agreed at a Branch
  • Adventurous Activites Training
  • Trainer program for potential Assistant Leader Trainers and Adventurous Activities Guides
  • Assessor program for potential Assistant Leader Trainers and Adventurous Activities Instructors
  • A Course for Potential Leader Trainers, held every two years (by invitation only)
