Scouts from around the world continue to support our bushfire relief efforts, with two Japanese Rover Scouts selling 3800 badges to support the recovery process.
Following the devastating bushfires that ravaged our country only a few weeks ago, our international Scouting community have been reaching out to support the recovery and rebuilding process. As at February 19, 120,000 Bushfire Relief Badges have been sold, with the majority being purchased by overseas Scouts.
Hearing the devastation occurring in Australia, Japanese Rover Scout Nanami Edasako and her brother Yudai, organised a bulk purchase of 3800 Bushfire Recovery Badges (worth AUD$19000) for over 300 Japanese Scouts and units as a service project to help raise funds for those affected by the bushfires.
“I want to support Australia, then I saw the recovery badge, so I came up with the idea of helping other Japanese Scouts purchase the badge to get more people to support Australia.” Nanami said. “After I asked my brother if he can do the project with me, we started up the project in our Rover crew.”
For Yudai, the spirit to support Australia during this unprecedented disaster was personal. During a recent university exchange in Perth, in his role as a Japanese Rover Scout, Yudai actively helped out at 1st Wanneroo Scout Group. The connections and friendships formed during this time showed Australia as a compassionate and resilient country.
On 16 January, the Scout Association of Japan announced their members can wear the Australia Bushfire Recovery Badge on their Scout uniform to show their support for Australia.
