We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Malcolm Westaway AO. He was 90 years old.
You would have heard from last month’s Scouting notices as well as within our Scouting family, the loss of our long-standing member of the Lord Baden-Powell Society, Mr Neil Westaway AO.
Not only a Patron of the Society for many years, Mr Westaway retired in June 2015 as Chairman of the Lord Baden-Powell Society after 12 years of dedicated service.
Neil became Chairman in 2003 when founder, Mr A. Geoff Lee AM OAM, was suffering from a terminal illness which prevented him from continuing. During his time as Chairman, Neil kept the Society on a steady course of growth so that it is now been recognised, as an integral element in the growth of Scouting in Australia, providing vital support for families suffering from financial hardship.
For those who did not know Neil, you may not be aware of his many achievements in Scouting across his life, and just to name a few, he became Chief Commissioner of Victoria in 1979, then Chief Commissioner of Australia from 1986 to 1992 after which he became the Chairman of the World Scout Organisation. He was awarded the Silver Kangaroo in 1985 and then the Bronze Wolf in 1999. Born in 1932, his Scouting story started in 1941 at the 4th Caulfield Scout Group in Victoria age 9.
“It is with deep sadness that I advise you of the passing of Neil Westaway last Friday. Neil was a true Scout and real a gentleman, and he will be sadly missed.” These are the words from his friend, David W Jones, who has had the great opportunity to work with Neil for many years.
The memorial service to celebrate the life of Neil Westaway AO, took place on August 17 at 2pm at the Kooyong Tennis Club. All members attending were in full Scout uniform.
Our deepest condolences are extended to Neil’s family and his closest friends.
