The NatShack at AJ2025

Showcasing Scouts Australia’s Vibrant Programs

AJ2025, the Australian Jamboree, brought together Scouts and Venturer Scouts aged 11 to 18 from across the nation for an action-packed experience of adventure, community, and personal growth. Among the many highlights at this year’s Jamboree was the NatShack, a tropical-themed program display that showcased the breadth of what Scouts Australia has to offer.

A Tropical Welcome

From the moment visitors stepped into the NatShack through the misting gateway—positioned conveniently in the Jamboree mall—they were transported to a colourful, tropical paradise. Palm trees, vibrant umbrellas, and tropical décor created a fun and inviting atmosphere, drawing Scouts, Venturers, and leaders alike to explore the various initiatives housed under one roof.

It also proved to be a great place to stay dry during the occasional downpour of rain!

A Hub of Scouts Australia Initiatives

The NatShack served as a central hub for a range of national programs and activities. Each display offered a unique opportunity for attendees to learn more, ask questions, and get inspired:

  • Rover Scope: Showcasing the adventures, service opportunities, and camaraderie that come with being a Rover Scout, this display offered firsthand insights into Rover activities and how Scouts and Venturers can take the leap beyond the horizon in their Scouting journey. RoverScope featured a Rover buggy from Ironbark Rover Unit in which Scouts sat in to compete in Mario Kart competitions!
  • Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT): A dedicated stand and helpdesk provided information on accredited qualifications available through SAIT, demonstrating the practical, real-world benefits that Scouting offers its members.
  • International Scouting: A vivid display highlighted upcoming global Scouting events, including Jamborees and expeditions overseas. There was also a pop-up about Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland, inspiring young people to embark on international adventures.
  • Youth Program and Scouts | Terrain Survey: Attendees had the chance to give direct feedback on the Youth Program, as well as on Scouts | Terrain (the program’s digital program tool). These surveys ensured that the youth voice remains at the heart of Scouting’s continued development.
  • Character Development Courses: Hands-on trials allowed Scouts to experience the forthcoming Character Development courses, designed to foster resilience, leadership, and a sense of personal responsibility.
  • Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund: A dedicated section celebrated the impact of this leadership fund, which supports adventurous Scouting projects that build confidence and leadership skills in young people.
  • Scouts Asia-Pacific Region (APR) Display: Representatives from the APR offered insights into Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shared stories of initiatives that Scouts throughout the region have undertaken to address community needs and environmental challenges.

A Legacy of Innovation

The NatShack followed in the tradition of previous National Program Displays—from the Youth Program Review in 2016 to the New Program launch in 2019—continuing the legacy of introducing cutting-edge ideas and improvements in Australian Scouting. By gathering feedback and sharing new concepts, the NatShack ensured that everyone at AJ2025 could glimpse the exciting future and opportunities of Scouts Australia.

The NatShack at AJ2025 proved that Scouting in Australia continues to thrive and evolve —nurturing global citizens, championing sustainability, and empowering young leaders. Through lively conversations, hands-on demos, and the friendly atmosphere of a tropical haven, the NatShack provided an unforgettable glimpse into the dynamic world of Scouts Australia. It’s a reminder that no matter the location or theme, the Scouting community remains steadfast in its commitment to learning, adventure, and the development of youth across the country and beyond.
