Introducing the Adventurous Journey badge

We’re excited to unveil the Adventurous Journey badge, to be presented to youth members who plan and lead an Adventurous Journey! There are different coloured badges for each age section, now available from The Scout Shop.

In Scouts, we use badges to recognise personal progression through the Achievement Pathways. The Adventurous Journey is part of the peak award in each section, but this doesn’t mean only those Scouts undertaking their peak award can lead an Adventurous Journey.

An Adventurous Journey should allow a Scout to put into practice some of the skills they have developed during their time in that section. Whether they’re cycling, bushwalking, paddling or something else, it should present a real adventure that challenges Scouts to extend their comfort zones in the outdoors. The requirements for the Adventurous Journey vary between sections, so head to Scouts Terrain to learn more.

Scouts who attend an Adventurous Journey, but aren’t the lead, can be recognised for their participation towards their Milestones and may have developed in the Outdoor Adventure Skills as well.

The continuous improvement of our program offering ensures that Scouts can better contribute to the education of young people in achieving their full potential. The implementation of these priorities will involve reviewing what currently exists and working to improve the supports, systems, policies and resources that underpin each area.

Embodying this year’s #OutsideIn25 challenge, six Venturer Scouts from Victoria recently embarked on an unforgettable Adventurous Journey in New Zealand’s alpine wilderness. They braved snow, hail, wind and rain to complete the Routeburn and Greenstone tracks on the South Island. Their perseverance was rewarded with breathtaking views, incredible landscapes, and encounters with remarkable wildlife.

Philip from 1st Ashburton Scout Group, who planned and led the trip as his Adventurous Journey, was the first recipient of the new Adventurous Journey badge. The 80km adventure offered a huge range of unique and amazing experiences, and challenged the Project Patrol to work together and rely on each other’s strengths.

In preparing for this trip, the Venturer Scouts were actively supported and mentored by their adult Leaders, who stayed in nearby Glenorchy during the Adventurous Journey. The Project Patrol’s experience was made possible with the generous support of the Dick & Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF).

Philip and all members of the Patrol share immense pride in what they achieved and how they grew along the way. There’s no doubt the learnings, friendships and memories of this expedition will be cherished at 1st Ashburton for years to come.

Like Philip’s, your Adventurous Journey could see you and your friends exploring new environments, testing your skills, and reaching extraordinary heights. Speak to your Unit Council and Leaders about planning your Adventurous Journey and then adding the badge to your uniform!
