Scouts Australia is deeply saddened by the violent attacks at Bondi and the loss of life that has resulted. We extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones, to those who have been injured, and to all who are experiencing fear, grief, or distress following this tragedy.
Scouts Australia unequivocally rejects all acts of violence, hatred, and terror, which have no place in Australia, no place in our communities, and no place in the world we seek to build.
We also acknowledge the profound impact this event has had on the wider community. We express our sincere gratitude to the emergency responders, lifesavers, medical staff, and volunteers who acted with courage, professionalism, and compassion, as well as to the members of the public who stepped forward to help others in moments of fear and uncertainty. Their actions reflect the very best of community spirit and service.
At times like this, Scouting turns to its values. Our Promise and Law call us to be people of peace, compassion, and service, and to stand with those who are hurting. As messengers of peace, Scouts seek to respond not with fear or division, but with care, understanding, and a commitment to community.
Australia is strengthened by its diversity, built by generations of people from many cultures, backgrounds, and faiths. Our Jewish community is an important and valued part of that story, and today we stand with them in solidarity, compassion, and respect.
Scouts Australia is a movement open to all. We are multi-faith and multicultural, and we believe every young person and volunteer should feel safe, welcomed, respected, and valued. Across our Movement are Jewish Scout Groups and Scouts of Jewish heritage, alongside Scouts of many faiths and backgrounds. They are all part of our Scout family, and they belong.
We also reaffirm that condemning violence must never become a condemnation of any faith or community. Scouting recognises the dignity of every human being and seeks to build bridges of understanding rather than walls of division. This is a time to come together with clarity, kindness, and unity, guided by the values that Scouting has upheld for more than a century.
As the Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement has previously affirmed, Scouting stands for peace, inclusion, mutual respect, and dialogue. That commitment remains steadfast. Our mission is to contribute to a better world, and our vision is of communities where young people grow in harmony, supported by understanding and care.
Today, we stand with our Jewish brother and sister Scouts in Australia and around the world. We stand with all who reject hatred and choose compassion. And we recommit ourselves to the Scouting values of friendship, service, understanding, and hope – and to the belief that a more peaceful world is possible.
On behalf of Scouts Australia, I extend our deepest condolences and reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and peaceful future for all young people.
Yours in Scouting,
