As Scouts, we are all about making a difference in our communities and protecting the environment. Clean Up Australia Day is coming up on Sunday, 1 March 2026, an excellent chance to live out our values and contribute to the care of our beautiful country.
Every year, thousands of Australians come together to clean up their local areas – whether it’s parks, beaches, bushland, or urban spaces. By picking up litter and waste, we help protect wildlife, prevent pollution, and ensure future generations can continue enjoying the natural beauty around them. This simple yet powerful act is a reminder of how we can all take responsibility for the environment.
Scouting teaches us the importance of environmental responsibility, and Clean Up Australia Day is a great way to put this into action. This is a fantastic opportunity not only to help clean up our communities but also to link it to your Scouting journey. Why not turn it into a Special Interest Area (SIA) project? By doing so, you can earn an SIA badge while doing your bit for the environment!
Organise a Clean-Up Event
Gather your Scout Group and register a clean-up at a local park, river, beach, or other spot in need of some attention. Work with your Leaders to choose a location that will benefit from a bit of extra care.
Join an Existing Clean-Up
If your Group isn’t holding a clean-up event, there are plenty of registered events around the country. Head over to the Clean Up Australia website to find a nearby event and get involved.
Make it a Fun Challenge
Add a little competition! See who can pick up the most trash, or make a game out of finding the strangest discarded item (always safely, of course). You’ll have fun while doing something meaningful!
Keep the Momentum Going
Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic starting point, but why stop there? Encourage your Unit to continue clean-up activities throughout the year. Regular action will keep your local environment clean and beautiful.
Share the Experience
Show others the impact of your efforts by sharing photos of your Scout Group in action. Use the hashtag #ScoutsCleanUp to inspire others to get involved and make a difference.
