An Unforgettable Hike on the Cooloola Great Walk

A Patrol of four Venturer Scouts and two Rover Scouts from NSW recently embarked on an unforgettable adventure along Tasmania’s iconic Overland Track. The journey not only tested their physical limits but also immersed them in the breathtaking beauty of one of Australia’s most pristine natural environments. Over the course of six days, the Patrol hiked through dense rainforests, alpine meadows, and past jagged peaks, covering the stunning terrain from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, Tasmania.

As the Patrol set up camp each night, they didn’t just experience the landscape – they connected with it, taking time to reflect on the environment around them and its significance to Tasmania’s natural heritage. However, the adventure was about more than just exploration; it was about developing crucial life skills in leadership, decision-making, and responsibility.

Responsible Leadership on the Trail

Patrol Leader Laura shared that the Overland Track journey was a valuable lesson in responsible leadership. “I learned that I had to think twice, even three times, about every decision,” she says. “Whether it was assessing trail safety, deciding when to move or stop, or preparing for the unpredictable weather, I had to stay vigilant to ensure everyone was safe and ready for whatever came next.”

The unpredictable Tasmanian weather – where sunshine could turn to heavy rain and wind in a matter of minutes – provided additional challenges. At one point, the weather shifted rapidly, and Laura had to make quick decisions to ensure the safety and comfort of the team. “We set up checkpoints along the trail to make sure no one was left behind,” she explained. “The first and last groups carried a Personal Locator Beacon for extra safety, allowing us to keep in touch even in remote areas.”

Teamwork and Planning for Success

Through responsible risk-taking and meticulous planning, the Patrol was able to navigate the weather and terrain while ensuring everyone’s safety and well-being. The experience fostered not just physical resilience but also a deeper understanding of teamwork, problem – solving, and collaboration.

Beyond navigating the rugged terrain, Patrol Leader Laura reflected on the invaluable lessons she gained in planning and organization. From managing food and gear to timing and logistics, every decision shaped the group’s success. “This adventure improved my ability to motivate and inspire others, especially when the going got tough,” she shared. “I learned to guide others confidently while staying flexible and adaptable in a constantly changing environment.”

A Milestone in Scouting

As the Patrol reached Lake St Clair, they reflected not just on the miles hiked, but on the personal growth and leadership skills they had gained. The journey through Tasmania’s wild terrain became a milestone in their Scouting experience – one that they will carry with them for years to come.

This unforgettable adventure along the Overland Track highlighted the Scouts’ development as leaders, teammates, and individuals – skills that will serve them well as they continue their journey in Scouting and beyond.
