In addition to the physical challenges, the hike provided the Patrol with practical lessons in hiking logistics and safety. The team learned to plan for different terrains and understand the risks each environment posed. Ensuring each member was equipped with the necessary safety gear and understood how to react in emergencies, such as weather changes or injury, was key to their success. Throughout the journey, the Patrol maintained close communication, with a shadow party of Leaders offering support and guidance.
The expedition was an exercise in responsible risk-taking. Key safety measures included ensuring all participants had the required bushwalking qualifications, providing daily briefings, monitoring weather conditions, and maintaining constant communication with the Leaders. Emergency kits, including first aid supplies, satellite communicators, and emergency shelters, were packed for each day’s hike, ensuring the safety of all involved.
Reflecting on the trip, Ruby-Jane added, “Being responsible for the safety and well-being of my Patrol was a huge challenge, but I felt confident knowing I had planned thoroughly and communicated effectively with the team.”
