In 2025, a Patrol of eight Scouts from Scouts Victoria set off from Phillip Island on an exciting bike hike. The Patrol was eagar to take on the challenge, and though two of their Patrol members were unfortunately absent due to illness, the remaining members were more than ready to embrace the adventure ahead.
After arriving in Korrumburra, the Patrol unloaded their bikes for a final inspection and ensured everything was in good working order. The Patrol was soon on their way, cycling along the scenic rail trail towards Leongatha. The first 15km proved both exciting and challenging, but the Patrol pressed on, excited for their arrival at the Leongatha Scout Hall. They quickly set up camp on a flat patch of grass, though the night would prove less restful due to the wind and rain, which made it hard to get a good night’s sleep under canvas.
The next morning, after packing up camp and having breakfast, the Patrol set out once again. The sunshine had returned, and spirits were high as they cycled towards Koonwarra, where they made their first pit stop. Here, they took a break to explore and find a few geocaches before continuing on the trail to Meeniyan. In Meeniyan, the Patrol enjoyed a well-earned BBQ lunch in a beautiful community garden, taking time to relax and recharge for the final leg of the journey.
As the Patrol made their way from Meeniyan to Fish Creek, they encountered a heart-pounding moment: a large brown snake slithered across their path. Thankfully, everyone managed to stay safe, and the encounter became a memorable (and slightly nerve-wracking) experience. By 3pm, they reached Fish Creek after completing over 50km of cycling. After setting up camp, the Patrol enjoyed an afternoon of games and preparing a delicious dinner. As night fell, they gathered around the campfire to toast marshmallows and reflect on their journey.
The next day, after packing up camp, the Patrol headed to Stony Creek Go Karts for some high-speed fun. Racing around the track provided the perfect end to a fantastic trip.

Patrol Leader Lucy shared, “The bike hike was a valuable learning experience for all involved. The Patrol developed critical leadership and problem-solving skills, especially when it came to managing the Patrol’s varying levels of cycling experience and dietary needs.”
Lucy added, “The Patrol also gained hands-on experience in risk assessment and responsible decision-making, whether it was navigating highways, avoiding wildlife, or cooking over an open fire. Each challenge helped us grow as leaders and equipped us with skills they will carry forward into future adventures”
A huge thank you goes to Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF), whose generous support made this trip possible. Their contribution allowed the Patrol to take part in this incredible adventure, learning essential life skills and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
