Leadership Through Adventure Fund

Supported by Adventure, Driven by Leadership

The Expedition

A Patrol of eight Venturer Scouts from New South Wales embarked on a unique sailing and scientific expedition in Moreton Bay – Queensland, operated by Science Under Sail. Over six days at sea, the Patrol immersed themselves in life aboard a working research vessel, developing practical sailing skills including tacking, jibing, anchoring, navigation, and watchkeeping, while also contributing to marine science projects such as seagrass sampling and assessing environmentally friendly moorings.

Their journey extended across the bay’s islands, visiting Coochiemudlo Island, North Stradbroke Island, and Moreton Island. Along the way, they hiked coastal trails, snorkelled the Tangalooma Wrecks, fed dolphins, climbed the Big Sandhills, and explored the region’s unique coastal ecosystems. The adventure continued on land with visits across Queensland, including Australia Zoo, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, local markets, treetop adventure parks, art galleries, and hikes through the Glass House Mountains.

Life At Sea

Life at sea demanded teamwork, adaptability, and resilience. Living in confined spaces and working together around the clock challenged the Patrol to communicate effectively, delegate tasks, support one another, and make decisions under pressure. The Patrol developed practical skills in trip planning, budgeting, navigation, and resource management, while also building confidence, emotional awareness, leadership, and stronger interpersonal relationships.

Risk Management

The expedition also involved real-world risk management. The Patrol monitored changing weather conditions to decide on safe sleeping arrangements aboard the boat, adapted plans to remain within a limited fundraising budget, and managed food, water, and equipment to ensure safety during snorkelling and hikes. Equally important was learning to navigate interpersonal challenges respectfully, recognising when to compromise, step back, or support fellow Patrol members to maintain a positive dynamic.

Thank You

Experiences like this are made possible through the support of the Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF) – empowers young people to step beyond their comfort zones and take part in meaningful adventures that develop leadership, resilience, independence, and lifelong skills.

For many of our Patrol members, this was far more than just a trip – it was an experience that challenged perspectives, strengthened character, and created memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
