Leadership Through Adventure Fund

River to Rock Adventure to Australia’s Heart

Nine Victorian Cub Scouts, along with five dedicated Leaders, have completed an adventure of a lifetime travelling to the Northern Territory to explore some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes and discover what they could achieve together.

Where it begins

The idea began with a simple conversation between Patrol Leader Sophie and her Cub Leader. During a discussion about future adventures, Sophie shared that she wanted to hike somewhere more exciting than the familiar local bush tracks.

“Uluru,” Sophie said.

What started as a bold idea soon became a youth-led expedition. With the support of the Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF), Sophie and her Patrol set out to turn their dream into reality. The Cub Scouts worked alongside their Leaders and families to transform their vision into a detailed plan, learning that great adventures require more than enthusiasm, they require preparation, teamwork and commitment.

Over many months, the Patrol took ownership of the planning process. They researched travel options, compared accommodation choices, mapped out transport arrangements, developed meal plans, created budgets and considered the risks involved in travelling and hiking in a remote environment. With guidance from their Leaders, the Cub Scouts learned how to make decisions, solve problems and adapt their ideas to create a safe and achievable expedition.

After successfully receiving an LTAF grant to cover half of the project costs, the Patrol set themselves the challenge of raising the remaining funds. They organised and participated in a range of fundraising activities, including community events, recycling drives, local clean-up activities and a barbecue. Each activity helped build not only their adventure fund, but also their confidence, teamwork and connection with their local community.

In April 2025, their months of planning became a reality as the Patrol set off on their seven-day “River to Rock” adventure to Australia’s Red Centre. Their journey included exploring the spectacular landscapes of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, learning about Anangu culture and completing some of the region’s most memorable walks. The Cub Scouts walked the full 11-kilometre base of Uluru, challenged themselves on the Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta and experienced the breathtaking views from the Kings Canyon Rim Walk.

While the scenery was unforgettable, the greatest achievement was the growth of the young people themselves. Across long hiking days, early mornings, changing plans and remote travel, the Cub Scouts demonstrated resilience, cooperation and independence. They relied on the skills they had developed during their planning, supporting one another and taking responsibility for different parts of the adventure.

More than an adventure

The expedition became a real-life lesson in leadership. Through planning and delivering their journey, the Patrol developed skills in budgeting, communication, organisation, environmental responsibility and risk management. They discovered that leadership is not just about having ideas, it is about working with others to turn those ideas into action.

The “River to Rock” adventure represents the very best of youth-led Scouting: young people setting ambitious goals, embracing challenges and creating opportunities to learn beyond the usual boundaries.

“My Patrol and I have learnt that, we can achieve just about anything with good planning, hard work and dedication.” “We would like to thank our families and Leaders for their help and the people from our community, who like to help young kids to achieve amazing things. We are grateful that people were happy to help us, once they learn of our adventure.” – shared Patrol Leader, Sophie.

For Sophie and the rest of the Patrol, the journey was about much more than reaching Uluru. It was about believing in an idea, working together to make it happen and discovering that they were capable of achieving something truly extraordinary.
