Youth Program Review

What Are Fellow Scouts Saying About the Educational Proposal?

The first edition of our Educational Proposal has been shared around the country, with feedback being received on its contents. Take a read of some of the comments we’ve received!

A few weeks ago, the Youth Program Review released a draft of Scouts Australia’s new Educational Proposal. If you missed the release of the document, click here to find out.

We received some feedback on this document, and below you can read some thoughts shared with the Youth Program Review:

  • “Pg-29,3 ‘Scouting is a Movement of Young People, supported by Adults……’  Love this, Need it placed on large posters and issued to all groups to be put up in very visible place in their halls. I have made a person note to me about this – within [name removed] Cubs we need to look at a better way to bring this into our Cub Pack ‘Teach them, train them, let them lead’. Youth Leading, Adults Supporting.”
  • “Given the recognition throughout the report of the importance of social interactions for gen zed and alphas, was much consideration given to keeping the same number of years in each section but aligned to school year rather than birth year? Friendship groups in my experience in Scouts are school year based primarily and overcomes the issue of slow or fast learners who are in school years based on ability (i.e. accelerated or held back) from not being able to progress sections with their friends because they are too young or too old. I’m sure there is a reason for the choice I haven’t considered.”
  • “I’m a little put off by the small group leader system for the younger sections, at least. Aren’t there tremendous socio-emotional implications for elevating children of the same age above one another? It’s like not inviting their whole class to a birthday party.”
  • “Pg-10, 4 ‘It is clear that technology……………….’ Very positive thought, review needed to current Cub Section Boomerang and Achievement Badges to reflect this. A lot of the current works are out dated, uneven, not relevant. The three Boomerang levels need to be changed to better reflect the areas of Personal growth and by bring forward the poorly worded achievement badges.”
