28th New Zealand Scout Regatta

Australian Scouts Compete in Major New Zealand Scout Camp

There’s always international adventures for you to embark on! You never know where Scouting will take you.

Held triennially over nine days, the New Zealand National Scout Regatta attracted around 550 Scouts, Venturer Scouts, Rover Scouts and Leaders from all around New Zealand.  For the first time in recent years, Scouts Australia sent a small Contingent to the event, which was held between 29 December 2017 and 6 January 2018, on Onepoto Bay, Porirua.

Scouts Rowing

As the Australian Group was not large enough to compete on its own, our five youth members partnered with two New Zealand Groups to compete in the Regatta’s sailing, rowing, swimming, kayaking, seamanship and camping activities.

The Scouts worked hard together as a team, learning about two classes of boat not commonly used in Australia.  As none of the Australian team members had any experience in rowing, they were truly challenged in the non-sailing events when sails were replaced with rowing oars!

Our team did themselves proud, placing second overall out of the nineteen teams who competed and winning the camping trophy for hygiene, safety, tidiness and innovation.

As part of their Contingent experience, the Group also visited Wellington’s “Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa” and had fun in Auckland, with indoor snow slope and rock climbing activities and crossing the Harbour Bridge.

Opportunities for you to participate in New Zealand’s 2020-2021 National Scout Regatta, will be advertised on international.scouts.com.au
