While the Chief Commissioner of Australia is at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia USA, our new Under 30 Deputy Chief Commissioner, Luke Saunders is acting in the role, making him the youngest ever member to head our organisation.
At 27 years of age, Luke is the youngest ever Acting Chief Commissioner of Australia and the first young person to be appointed to the role. His temporary appointment follows a 21-year membership of the organisation, starting as a Joey Scout in 1997 and progressing through to Cub Scout, Scout, Venturer Scout and Rover Scout sections in the Scouts Australia NSW Branch.
“Over the last 21 years Scouting has provided me with life-changing experiences that are unmatched in any other youth movement in Australia and provided me with the training, skills and opportunities to excel in the role of Acting Chief Commissioner of Australia,” says Luke. “This appointment demonstrates Scouts Australia’s strong commitment to being a Movement of young people led by young people where adults play an important role supporting our young people to succeed at the challenges they take on.”
“The Youth Program in Scouting is adventurous, fun, challenging and inclusive to all and provides the framework to foster the development of young people in achieving their full potential as individuals to be active change makers in their local communities. I am excited and inspired by the progress our young people make every day in their communities and I hope this appointment is the catalyst to inspire and encourage other young people to achieve their goals and strive for new heights.”
“The range of opportunities in Scouting is endless, whether camping, bushwalking, canoeing or skiing, there is something for every young person that will interest them, challenge them to advance their skills, build their resilience and improve their confidence. Our young people are given the platform to take risks, make mistakes and grow as an individual all while developing their leadership, problem solving, and teamwork skills in a safe and supportive environment.”
Luke is also a Director on the Board of Scouts NSW and was previously the youngest ever State Commissioner for Rover Scouts in Scouts NSW.
