Nature and Environment for Joey Scouts
What happens when a global pandemic limits face-to-face interaction? The Scouting community, globally, turns to Scouting at home.
Here at Scouts Australia, we have compiled a range of programs and resources to support Scouting as we work through the different phases of community and social distancing, and self-isolation.
As we pause many of the face-to-face activities to support the challenges of a pandemic, what better time exists to dive deeper into understanding and appreciating our environment. What do you know about animals with pouches? How many bird species do you see each day? Can you identify and name them all?
Pialba Joey Scouts, Queensland, have prepared some environmental challenges that will suit any Joey Scout program, and could result in a Special Interest Area and/or Joey Scout Environment Challenge.
How are you making sure you engage with Nature and the Outdoors whilst Scouting from home?
Need some further inspiration? Why not explore and investigate the flora within your property and then compare with friends? What are the seeds that are on the ground? Can you identify them? How about the leaves? How many different types of leaves can you find and can you identify them? Scouts Queensland has provided some Special Interest Area project suggestions for Joey Scouts to complete focused on these topics.
Maybe you and your Joey Scouts can share the findings with others across Australia and compare the different plants, leaves and seeds that are in different locations!
Looking for some other environmental tasks to keep your Joey Scouts occupied? Join 1st Cranbourne Joey Scouts, Victoria, as they explore bugs, plants and composting while they are practicing their social distancing.
There could be many different environmental projects started, and even finished, as we adhere to the social distancing practices. Make sure you encourage your Joey Scouts to get outside and explore their own surroundings – it’s very easy not to notice things around our homes in our fast-paced lives, but when we are forced to stop we can make the most of the opportunity to observe the natural world around us.
