Sustainable Development Goals

SDG08 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

Decent work means opportunities for everyone to get into work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace, social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration!

Hundreds of millions of people around the world don’t have jobs, while many more workers and their families still live in poverty. Even as economies recover from the Global Financial Crisis, we face slower growth, widening inequalities, and not enough jobs to keep up with a growing labour force (UNDP). Achieving Goal 8 means creating decent jobs, equipping young people with relevant job skills, protecting everyone’s labour rights, and putting a stop to child labour.

Through our Sustainability Strategy & Action Plan, one of our intended outcomes is to be “an employer of choice”. Through our program we help develop youth members through the SPICES – readying them to participate in our society to the best of their abilities, and we aim to model best practice through our own offices. Check out the resources below to learn more, take action, and then share to spread the word.

We all dream of what we want to do when we grow up – even as we get older, we still strive for our goals and to find our place in the world. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Learn more and take action

We have been told many times that the young people of today will have many different jobs and careers across their working life, perhaps only filling roles for a few short years at a time. With a face-paced, rapidly changing world, we are preparing young people to be ready to step into workplaces with general capabilities and essential skills applicable across multiple employment sectors. We all deserve to take an active role in society, and pursue personal growth and economic security. While our ideal vocation may change over time, hopefully we are supported to learn and grow – so that we can find secure and rewarding roles.

Scouts Australia’s youth program team have started developing ideas for how you might engage with each of the Sustainable Development Goals. This card challenges you to contribute to our global goal of Decent Work and Economic Growth by considering how this area related to building a sustainable future. Every small part counts as we work towards these goals!
