1st African Rover Moot

1st Africa Rover Moot in Kenya

Scouts Australia recently sent a contingent of 33 members to the 1st African Rover Moot!

Scouts Australia recently sent a contingent of 33 members including 26 Rover Scouts to the 1st Africa Rover Moot in Kenya from April 15-25, 2023.

The contingent met in Nairobi for pre-moot activities which included visiting the Nairobi National Park, Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre and Hell’s Gate which gave much of the inspiration for the Lion King.

During the Moot, all attendees were given the opportunity to visit Nyeri which is the resting place of our founder, Lord Baden Powell and his wife Olave, as well as Paxtu where they lived their final years. It was a truly moving experience for everyone to visit such a significant location. Other activities included Bomas of Kenya which is a cultural experience of traditional dances and life around Kenya and a hike up Ngong Hills which gave fantastic views of Nairobi. The moot finished on the 25th and a small Anzac Service was held with the New Zealand attendees.

After the moot, 21 members continued their adventure to Tanzania. Activities included camping in the Serengeti and seeing all the lions, elephants and giraffes you could imagine, a visit of local villages to experience their way of life and finished in Zanzibar, an historic trading port for the Arabs and birthplace of the great showman Freddie Mercury.

The trip was truly a life changing experience and I hope we have a bigger and better contingent to the 2nd Africa Rover Moot in South Africa in 2026.
