Scouts Leading The Way

Making a Difference Globally

Scouts worldwide are making tangible impacts in their communities, from responding to natural disasters and combating environmental issues, to promoting gender equality. It’s exciting to share some recent highlights of their incredible work.

In Madagascar, Scouts were instrumental in addressing the catastrophic aftermath of Tropical Storm Ana and Cyclone Batsirai. Mobilising swiftly, over one thousand Scouts used their knowledge of local communities to provide vital logistical support, life-saving assistance, and even organising entertainment activities for displaced children. Their efforts were amplified by funding from the World Scout Foundation. Recognising the need for more training in humanitarian action, 30 young leaders were trained in disaster response, and a national policy and operational framework are currently in development. More than 30,000 Cubs, Scouts, and Rover Scouts in Japan took a firm stand against the issue of plastic waste. As part of the “Plagomi Busters” project, they collected over 2 million pieces of litter and took positive action against plastic waste, a pressing issue in Japan. This inspirational project, which included upcycling PET bottle caps into recyclable bags and dustbins, also raised awareness about the urgent need for sustainable waste management. Finnish and Ugandan Scouts collaborated to address the societal taboos around menstruation and promote gender equality through the “No Missed School Days” project. This initiative aims to support girls’ schooling and foster positive attitudes towards girls’ education. It has already reached over 110,000 people and continues to bring crucial discussions about menstrual health and gender equality to the forefront. Read about their remarkable project here.
