Scouts Australia National Executive Committee

Non-Executive Director Role Vacancy

The National Executive Committee of Scouts Australia is seeking applications to fill the vacancy of Independent Non-Executive Director.

About Scouts Australia

Scouts Australia, with a legacy spanning over 116 years, is the nation’s foremost youth development organisation. Guided by the Scout Promise and Law, Scouting is the values-driven youth leadership program for Australia, in the community and the outdoors. Scouting provides leadership opportunities through a program that is fun, challenging, adventurous and inclusive. We run a youth development program from age 5 to 25 years, with a guiding philosophy of “youth leading, adults supporting”.

With members across Australia and part of a network of 174 national Scout organisations boasting 57 million members globally, Scouting’s impact is profound and far-reaching.

The National Executive Committee

The National Executive Committee (NEC) effectively acts as the board responsible for governance, financial management, strategy and policy for Scouts Australia.

The Role

As an Independent Non-Executive Director, you would contribute to the decision making of the National Executive Committee. You would assist in guiding Scouts Australia’s leadership to ensure good governance is in place along with appropriate and contemporary policies, quality planning, and that appropriate financial management and risk measures are in place.

The NEC meets roughly once every eight weeks for up to 5 hours per meeting. These meetings are usually held on Saturdays. There is also one face to face meeting generally held over the last weekend in November to coincide with our Annual General Meeting.

This is an unpaid volunteer role and the successful applicant must undertake Police and Working with Children Checks prior to appointment.

Desired Skills

To complement the existing skill set of the NEC, we are seeking to identify individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Governance
  • Risk Management
  • Public Relations and Marketing
  • People and Culture / HR
  • Finance
  • Fundraising

We are actively seeking diverse representation on the NEC. While our broader organisation represents the diversity of the community, our governing board has yet to reflect this and is something we hope to change. We would welcome applications from people of all ages, genders and from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds. Prior board experience and/or membership with Scouts Australia is not necessary, but candidates must have a strong desire to help guide the direction of Scouting in Australia and have a genuine interest in youth development.

How to Apply

Applications should include a brief cover letter and CV to be emailed to Sarah Eldridge at sarah.eldridge@scouts.com.au. Applications will close on Monday 25 March 2024.
