During April 2024, more than 2000 Scouting members and leaders gathered together to attend a unique Scouting camp (Governor-General’s Camp 2024) held at the Governor-General’s residence, Canberra ACT.
Drawing notable attendance from Senators and MPs from the ACT and Federal Parliaments: Andrew Braddock MLA, Suzanne Orr MLA, Michael Pettersson MLA, Peter Cain MLA, Elizabeth Lee MLA, Hon. Rebecca Vassarotti MLA, Hon. Michael Gentleman MLA, Alicia Payne MP, David Smith MP and Luke Gosling MP. The Senators and MPs immersed themselves in various Scouting activities, including archery, environmental monitoring, scientific experiments, and essential camping skills.
This event highlighted the Scouts’ commitment to offering young people a diverse set of skills, while also fostering a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation and community care.
David Smith MP, took the opportunity to acknowledge and praise the vital role of Scout volunteers and highlighted the exceptional efforts of these volunteers, whose dedication and spirit were instrumental in organizing the event.
Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia, Brendan Watson OAM, also emphasized that Scouting, primarily driven by community-based volunteers, offers diverse opportunities for youth from all backgrounds. These volunteers not only support their local groups but continuously enhance their skills through training, enabling them to impart lifelong, practical skills to the young members. He collectively recognized that without these committed volunteers, Scouting could not achieve its remarkable goals.
