Scouts Taking Action: Get Involved in Clean Up Australia Day!

As Scouts, we live by the values of service, responsibility, and making a difference in our communities. Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect opportunity to put those values into action, get outdoors, and help protect the environment we all love exploring!

What is Clean Up Australia Day?

Every year, thousands of Australians step up to clean up parks, streets, waterways, and bushland, removing litter and waste to keep our country beautiful. It’s a simple way to take responsibility for our environment and ensure future generations can enjoy the same natural beauty we do.

Why Should Scouts Get Involved?

Scouting has a proud tradition of environmental stewardship. Whether you’re a Joey, Cub, Scout, Venturer, or Rover, your contribution makes a big impact! Why not take it a step further and write a Special Interest Area (SIA) project around your participation? Not only will you be helping Australia, but you can also earn an SIA badge at the same time! It’s a great way to link your passion for the environment with your personal development in Scouting.

How Can You Help?

Organise a Clean-Up Event – Your Scout Group can register a clean-up site at a local park, river, beach, or reserve. Work with Leaders to pick a location that needs some love.

Join a Local Clean-Up Team – If your Group isn’t organising an event, check out the Clean Up Australia website to find a registered clean-up site near you.

Make it a Challenge – See who can collect the most rubbish or find the strangest discarded item (safely, of course!). Turn it into a fun and engaging activity.

Go Beyond the Day – Clean Up Australia Day is a great starting point, but the real challenge is keeping our communities clean every day. Encourage your Unit to adopt a regular clean-up routine!

Spread the Word – Post photos of your Scout Group in action using the hashtag #ScoutsCleanUp to inspire others to get involved.

Remember, every piece of rubbish picked up helps protect our environment and wildlife. By working together, we can make a huge difference in our own backyards, neighbourhoods, and favourite outdoor spots. Scouts across Australia – let’s step up, take action, and leave our communities better than we found them!
