National Reconciliation Week 2025

Scouts Australia proudly recognises and values Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage as an essential part of our shared national identity.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is held yearly, it is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year the theme, ‘Bridging Now to Next’, reflects the deep connection between the past, present, and future – reminding us that reconciliation is a journey for all Australians, grounded in truth, respect, and unity.

The #NRW2025 theme artwork, created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw, features native plants – symbols of resilience, regeneration, and hope. These plants, which flourish after fire, reflect the strength and renewal possible when communities come together with a shared purpose.

Real impact through real action

In 2024, we began developing our first National Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) – a meaningful step toward lasting, respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We’re proud to share that this work is progressing. A key milestone is the search for Scouts Australia’s first Reconciliation Advisor. The Reconciliation Advisor’s role is dedicated to building stronger ties between the Scouting community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and celebration.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here are a few ideas of ways in which Groups can incorporate reconciliation actions into their program:

• Print and display an Acknowledgement of Country for your hall, and incorporate it into opening or closing parades
• Display the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags in your hall (you can obtain these for free from your Federal MP’s office)
• Research the Aboriginal names for local landmarks such as mountains, rivers or lakes
• Incorporate Aboriginal history and placename research into the planning for hikes or camps
• Teach the Aboriginal names for local indigenous animals or plants
• Purchase a map of Aboriginal Australia from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) for your hall
• Make sure that key dates are included in your planning, such as NAIDOC Week, Sorry Day, National Reconciliation Week or Aboriginal Children’s Day
• Invite Aboriginal elders and community members to join Scout events like ARA presentations or regular nights
