Dear Scouts, Leaders, Supporters, and Families,
Today, on World Scout Day, we join with millions of Scouts around the globe to celebrate the founding of our Movement and to reaffirm our shared values and purpose. On this day in 1907, Lord Robert Baden-Powell brought together 20 boys on Brownsea Island for what would become the beginning of the greatest youth movement the world has ever known.
Over a century later, the world has changed in ways that Baden-Powell could never have imagined. But the heart of Scouting – the values of the Scout Promise and Law – remains just as relevant today as it was then. In a world of constant change, where young people face increasing challenges to their mental health, sense of belonging, and vision for the future, Scouting continues to offer something powerful and enduring: a place to grow in character, resilience, and hope.
This year, we have compelling evidence to support what many of us have long believed: Scouting makes a difference. The latest report from Resilient Youth Australia confirms that young people involved in Scouts are:
These findings are a powerful affirmation of the impact our Movement is having right across Australia. In a time when society is asking how we can better support the next generation, Scouting is answering that call – not by standing still, but by evolving.
Across Australia and the world, Scouting has modernised to remain relevant to the needs, interests, and aspirations of today’s young people. Our youth-led programs, adventurous opportunities, community service, and commitment to inclusion reflect a contemporary Movement that stays true to its roots while embracing the future.
To every Scout, Leader, volunteer, and supporter – thank you. You are part of something extraordinary. You are part of a global Movement that empowers young people to discover their potential, lead with integrity, and leave the world a better place.
On this World Scout Day, may we all recommit ourselves to living the Promise and the Law – because in doing so, we light the way for others.
Yours in Scouting,
Brendan Watson OAM
