Leadership Through Adventure Fund

K’gari – Fraser Island Adventurous Journey

A Patrol of six Queensland Scouts embarked on a three-day, two-night adventurous journey at K’gari – Fraser Island, Queensland. Through the assistance from the Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund, the Patrol was able to embarked on this adventurous journey during the winter of 2024 from Central Station to Lake MacKenzie.

Coming from an Island surrounding, the Patrol is familiar with coastal environment and was inspired to learn more about the K’gari environment and it’s history and explore the lakes and creeks on the island.

Planning of the Expedition

Patrol Leader Charlie highlighted some of the key components the Patrol must take into consideration when planning for the trip; such as the challenges of the hike (especially the soft sand section), the weight of their camping and hiking gear and the hike required a 4wd qualified Leader to accompany the Patrol during the hike.

Charlie have expressed, “The expedition has given me opportunity to learn how to plan the adventure on a budget and lessons on how to Lead my Patrol through the hike and assist them through mental challenges.”

Risk Management

The Patrol demonstrated responsible risk taking by ensuring they camped within a dingo proof fences and kept their food locked in the food lockers at the hiker’s camps. Dingoes are part of the K’gari environment and park ranger talked through the danger of dingoes and how to handle situations if the Patrol encounter them during their hikes.

Memorable Journey

The journey encountered was something incredible for the Patrol to remember for a long time. Not only the landscape and Island environment at K’gari provided incredible lakes and creeks that the Patrol have visited.

The Patrol have learned that the Fraser Island use to be full of lumberjacks because there are some massive trees. These trees were big and unique on Fraser Island because of its rainforest surrounding. The Patrol learned from the central station that there used to be some giant trees that at the valley of the giants (densest part) there were big enough to hold 30 protestors will be on top and trying to stop tree cutters destroying the environment.
