Scouts Leading the Way with Teamwork at Wilsons Promontory
In early 2024, Queensland Scout Alba was determined to make her Adventurous Journey for her Australian Scout Award (ASA) truly unforgettable. She wanted something beyond the familiar, something that would take her out of Queensland and into new, uncharted territory. Her destination? A 47km hike through the stunning Wilsons Promontory in Victoria.
Thanks to the generous support of the Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF), Alba was able to turn her dream into reality. After months of careful planning, she applied for LTAF funding and successfully secured half of the total cost of the trip. The remaining funds were raised through group fundraising efforts and personal contributions.
In September 2024, Alba Led a Patrol of six Scouts on this unforgettable six-day adventure. From the excitement of flights to Victoria to camping at the freezing Tidal River, every moment was filled with both excitement and challenges.
The hike itself tested the Patrol’s teamwork and perseverance, with gusty winds, cold weather, and rugged terrain pushing everyone to their limits. Each day, the Patrol set out early, racing against the weather and overcoming physical and mental challenges. Along the way, they were rewarded with breathtaking ocean views, a battle with 30-knot winds on the beach, and the satisfaction of reaching their final destination ahead of schedule – impressing their leaders with their resilience and positive attitude.
After completing the hike, the Patrol enjoyed a day exploring Melbourne’s famous landmarks, from the Original Lolly Store to Old Melbourne Gaol, and even had a go at climbing at Hardrock Climbing.
This adventure would not have been possible without the support of the LTAF, and Patrol Leader Alba would like to thank her Patrol for their dedication, her Leaders for their guidance, and her families for their unwavering support. It’s an experience that the Patrol will treasure forever.
