Venturer Scouts’ Epic Journey Exploring New Zealand’s Volcanoes and Beyond

Three Venturer Scouts from New South Wales set out on an unforgettable adventure through the frosty terrain of New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park. Braving the cold, the Scouts faced unpredictable weather, towering volcanoes, and challenging climbs, all while building teamwork, Leadership, and resilience in an environment unlike any they had encountered before.

This incredible journey, supported by the Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF), offered the patrol a new challenge each day, with diverse terrain, experiences, and opportunities for growth to embrace.

From long walks through grasses and shrubs to tough ascents and descents, each day demanded grit and perseverance. The most physically demanding stretch involved climbing two steep mountains, gaining over 1000 meters in elevation, and reaching the highest point of 1868m, where the Scouts were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. Despite the challenging terrain, the final day offered a gentler route, with continuous uphills and downhills, but ended with stunning views of the village.

Along the way, the Scouts stayed in huts, providing a chance to rest and reflect on the natural beauty surrounding them, deepening their appreciation for the environment.

Lessons Learned Along the Trail

The Scouts’ journey was an opportunity to hone their bushcraft skills, particularly navigation. Though the track was relatively well-paved, the Scouts quickly learned the importance of using hiking poles (something they hadn’t done before) and developed better footwork and teamwork along the way. One important lesson was the value of paying attention to topographic lines on a map, especially when navigating the steep saddles and climbs that they hadn’t anticipated.

Beyond the physical skills, the journey also exposed the Scouts to the rich environment, wildlife, and culture of New Zealand, broadening their understanding of the country both on and off the trail.

Leadership and Responsibility

The trek also served as a vital Leadership development experience. Patrol Leader Liam shared “I took on the responsibility for the planning and logistics of the entire journey, including managing finances, coordinating travel arrangements, and overseeing day-to-day tasks. This hands-on Leadership experience helped me to grow in decision-making and confidence, demonstrating the importance of responsibility and careful planning.”

Responsible Risk-Taking in Action

Hiking at high altitudes and facing unpredictable weather conditions meant that risk management was a crucial part of the journey. The Scouts were prepared with contingency plans, ready to delay or reroute if conditions became too hazardous, or even stay in the huts overnight if necessary. Fortunately, the weather held out, and the Scouts were able to complete their journey as planned without having to use any backup plans.

An Adventure of a Lifetime

This adventure in Tongariro National Park was more than just a physical test; it was an invaluable experience that challenged the Scouts’ leadership abilities, teamwork, and resilience. From navigating tough terrain to respecting nature, the journey provided a wealth of life skills that the Scouts will carry with them long after the trip ended. It was a true adventure of growth, Leadership, and unforgettable memories.

Thank you

The Patrol would like to express their sincere thanks to the Taupo Scout Group from Scouts Aotearoa for graciously hosting them overnight before and after the hike. A heartfelt thank you to the Leaders and adult helpers who supported the Patrol throughout the entire journey. They would also extend their appreciation to the Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund for their generous support, which made this adventure possible.
