Harmoney Week (15 – 21 March, 2026) celebrate Australia’s rich cultural diversity. As a youth organisation, Scouts Australia is proudly committed to being an inclusive community that welcomes all young people, regardless of their background. Harmony Week promotes inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone, and provides an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity that makes our communities and our Movement united.
Harmony Week encourages communities across Australia to come together and reflect on what makes each of us unique while embracing the shared values of respect, understanding, and equality. The theme for this year’s Harmony Week is simple but powerful: ‘Everyone Belongs.’
As our Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia, Brendan Watson OAM have shared in his recent message, “Scouting is founded on values that promote unity, friendship, and understanding among people from all walks of life. Harmony Week is a chance to honour these values by celebrating the cultural diversity that makes Australia, and our Movement, so vibrant and strong.” This message reinforces the importance of fostering inclusiveness and respect within our Scout groups and communities.
International Food Night
What better way to celebrate culture than through food? Organise an International Food Night where Scouts cook or bring a dish from their culture or another that interests them. While sharing the meal, participants can learn about the origins of the dish, its cultural significance, and when it is traditionally eaten.
International Night
For younger sections, take them on a virtual journey around the world. Set up different stations representing various countries, and at each one, do an activity related to that culture – such as learning a dance, making a traditional costume, or playing a sport native to that country. Passports for the “trip” can be created and stamped at each station!
Family Diversity Museum
Encourage members to create a pop-up museum that showcases items significant to their family’s cultural background. It could be anything from a traditional artefact to a personal story or family heirloom. Members can then run tours of their pop-up museums and share the stories behind their objects with others.
Learn a Cultural Dance or Exercise
Organise a cultural dance or exercise class where a guest instructor can teach Scouts a traditional dance or physical activity from another culture, such as Irish dancing, the New Zealand Haka, or Tai Chi. This will be a fun way to engage while gaining a deeper appreciation of another culture.
Welcome to Country
Invite an elder from your local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community to perform a ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony. This is an opportunity for Scouts to learn about the significance of the land they live on and gain insights into the traditions of the First Nations people.
Guest Speaker Session
Invite a guest speaker who has recently moved to Australia – such as an immigrant or refugee to share their story. They can offer unique insights into their journey and the cultural experiences that shaped their life. This will not only raise awareness but also foster empathy and understanding among Scouts.
Harmony Week serves as a reminder that our diversity is what makes Australia such a special place. It’s a time to acknowledge our multicultural society, encourage open-mindedness, and celebrate our differences.
As our Chief Commissioner highlights, “It is essential that Scouts Australia continues to nurture a culture of inclusion, where every individual feels welcomed and valued, regardless of their background or heritage.” By fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of various cultures, we create stronger, more inclusive communities.
Purchase a Harmony Day badge from the Scout Shop and come together this Harmony Week to share experiences and make a commitment to creating a more inclusive world where everyone truly belongs.
