The 2026 Tasmanian Branch Friendship Tour was an inspiring three-week international adventure that showcased the very best of Tasmanian Venturer Scouting. Travelling through the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Türkiye, the Contingent embraced cultural immersion, outdoor challenge, international friendship, and meaningful service. From Brownsea Island – the birthplace of Scouting – to the alpine valleys of Kandersteg, the vibrant streets of Istanbul, and ultimately Anzac Cove at Gallipoli, Tasmanian Venturer Scouts proudly represented both their State and Scouts Australia at every stage of the journey.
Throughout the expedition, Venturer Scouts embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, courage, and a willingness to step beyond their comfort zones. They navigated London through a city-wide game of Monopoly, hiked to Oeschinensee and plunged into its icy alpine waters, stood atop the Swiss Alps at Jungfraujoch, shared culture and friendship with Scouts Türkiye, and undertook service activities in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The Gallipoli program became the emotional heart of the tour. Tasmanian youth participated in rehearsals, official readings, and service duties associated with the ANZAC commemorations, contributing across the Dawn Service, Lone Pine, and Chunuk Bair ceremonies. For many participants, these moments represented the culmination of years of anticipation and preparation. Standing on ground of such profound historical significance brought a deep sense of humility, gratitude, and honour as they represented Scouts Tasmania and Scouts Australia.
“The trip to the birthplace of Scouting, the presentation of the peak awards and meeting other Scouting members from around the world at the island, was truly a very powerful and moving moment for all of us.”
“By standing at that site, we came to realise, that without Scouting, most of the people that were on the trip and even the people here at this meeting, we would possibly never have known or met. A true connection from over 100 years ago.”
“We have all come back different young adults, and an understanding that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and “look wide” Thank you so much for making this trip possible.” – shared by Venturer Scouts, Scouts Tasmania
This expedition stands as a landmark achievement for Tasmanian Scouting. It demonstrated the capability, maturity, and service ethos of Venturer Scouts on the international stage. The Contingent’s contribution at Gallipoli, assisting commemorative operations and supporting thousands of visitors, reflected an extraordinary commitment to service and represented one of the most significant undertakings by a Tasmanian Scout Contingent overseas. Their resilience, teamwork, adaptability, and Leadership established a benchmark for future international experiences and highlighted what can be achieved when young people are empowered to lead and serve.
Beyond the adventure and the friendships formed, this journey reinforced an important truth: Scout Tasmania may be a small Branch, but it possesses an extraordinary spirit. The youth and Leaders who undertook this expedition proved that Tasmanian Venturer Scouts can stand with confidence in the world’s most significant cultural and historical settings, making a meaningful contribution while embodying the values of Scouting. Their achievements should inspire future generations to look wider, aim higher, and continue creating a better world through service and Leadership.
