Cameron’s trip to AJ2019 was an unforgettable experience thanks to the Lord Baden-Powell Society. Check out his recount of the adventure below.
On 3rd January 2019 I left Perth Airport for a once in a lifetime opportunity. My destination was Tailem Bend in South Australia to attend the 2019 Australian Scout Jamboree.
I am so thankful for this opportunity that would never have been financially possible without the Lord Baden-Powell Society grant that I was so fortunate to receive. My Scout Group also played a major role with helping to get me there with all the fundraising that we did!
My first impressions of the AJ2019 site was, “ Wow, I’ve never seen so much dust!” It was also very lucky that it didn’t rain much, so there was minimal mud. When I arrived it was really hot, and when we left it was also a very hot day but otherwise the weather was mostly pleasant.
Tent city was erected over my first day and I was amazed at the facilities provided including the abseiling tower, shops, pool, shooting range and stage.
The opening and closing ceremonies were unforgettable with the fireworks being the best that I have ever seen. I was so proud that my Patrol Leader got to carry the Western Australian flag at the Opening Ceremony.
I am so grateful to have been with my Troop where I had great Leaders and great Scouts to experience this opportunity with me.
My highlight of AJ2019 would have been The Cube. I loved doing the abseiling and rock climbing. My low point would have to be that I lost my loved Western Australian Hoodie at the airport on the way home.
Thank you to everyone involved for making AJ2019 a dream come true for me, I will be forever grateful to have had this wonderful experience!
