Unforgettable Voyage: Canoe Expedition Down the Svartälven River, Sweden

Recently, six Rover Scouts from Scouts Queensland and Scouts Western Australia had an incredible opportunity to embark on a six-day canoe journey through Sweden’s stunning Värmlands region. The patrol paddled down the Svartälven River, crossed serene lakes, and navigated the tranquil beauty of Sweden’s forests and waterways.

Covering 85km over land and water, this adventure offered the patrol chances to learn about themselves and of each other. Some members enhanced their paddling skills and the group discovered what it truly means to enjoy summer in Scandinavia—hint: it involves high-quality rain gear and a relentlessly positive attitude!

With four days of near-constant rain, they made the most of every patch of sun by swimming, foraging for berries, hand-reel fishing, learning about mushrooms, making campfires, and exploring the islands they camped on.

One of their favourite spots was an island where they discovered after a long day of paddling in the steady rain. This picturesque island featured a landing stage, ample space for their tents, birch trees for firewood, and numerous walking trails. With 360-degree views of the pine forests, a charming church on the lake, and a massive bird of prey nest on the neighbouring island, the patrol described it as “Truly a magical place!”. Leaving was tough, but the memories will last a lifetime.

The patrol expressed they are all grateful for this experience, learning to handle the consistency of rain, savouring the stunning views, and maintaining high morale even while living in close quarters. It was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with new friends, strengthen their teamwork skills, and deepen their friendships.

The patrol concluded their adventure with a meaningful service day at Värmlandsgården, where they hired their canoes and equipment. They cleared rubbish from the bushwalk area, cleaned company vehicles, and prepared vegetable garden beds with organic matter. They were lucky to enjoy a warm sunny day and wrapped up the journey by basking in the lake and the final sunset of the Swedish adventure.

A big thank you to Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund for supporting this once-in-a-lifetime experience. As one of the patrol member, Caitlin says, “It is truly a memory that will last forever!”
