Scouts from across Australia are continually seeking out new challenges to grow their leadership and personal skills – and ten Rover Scouts from Bayswater Sea Scouts, Scouts WA recently did just that through a unique opportunity funded by the Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF).
The Patrol embarked on an eight-day expedition to Victoria, where they immersed themselves in the alpine environment and developed their snow sport abilities, all while building confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.
The journey began with cultural exploration in Melbourne, including visits to local museums and galleries. The group then headed to Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort for a five-day ski school, where they learned the fundamentals of skiing and snowboarding, snow safety, equipment care, alpine hiking, and how to prepare for the challenges of a high-altitude environment.
While the trip was full of outdoor learning, it was also a deep dive into personal and interpersonal development. Travelling and living together as a Patrol helped them refine skills such as decision-making, empathy, delegation, and conflict resolution.
For some Patrol members, it was their first-ever experience with snow, adding an extra layer of excitement and wonder to the trip.
“This trip was all about personal growth through adventure,” Ciara continued. “For many, it was their first time away from family, trying a new skill and facing a completely new environment. These experiences helped us build resilience and confidence when facing the unknown.”
As Patrol Leader, Ciara reflected on the invaluable skills she gained through leading the expedition from planning, budgeting, and risk assessment, to overseeing safety and wellbeing for the entire Patrol.
“The leadership experience was incredible. It’s helped me improve my communication, accountability, and delegation skills that I’ll carry forward in Scouting and beyond.”
The Patrol extends a heartfelt thank you to the Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund, as well as to the mentors and supporters who helped bring their vision to life.
