We already have enough food to feed everyone on the planet, but hunger is still the leading cause of death in the world. Millions of people are malnourished, but if we simply cut down on food waste, give everyone equal access to land, and support local and sustainable farmers, no one will ever go hungry again.
Food waste, inadequate nutrition and unsustainable farming practices – there are many ways that we can see how this SDG relates to our own lives. As Scouts there are ways we can tackle that within our organisation (see our Sustainability Strategy & Action Plan), though we can also look wider and support local and international poverty reduction efforts. Check out the resources below to learn more, take action, and then share to spread the word.
Whilst we may not be out in the community much during the current conditions, there is an increased push to support local produce and support each other in times of need and uncertainty. One aspect to think about is our actions and what we could do to support sustainable food production and consumption. Scouts Australia’s youth program team have started developing ideas for how you might engage with each of the Sustainable Development Goals.
This card challenges you to contribute to our global goal of Zero Hunger by considering what you do with your food waste. How might you be able to minimise your wastage, and perhaps commence a journey towards sustainable produce? What community supports and food banks exist in your area? Every small part counts as we work towards these goals!
Now that you’ve taken action, share it to inspire others. If you post to social media, please tag Scouts Australia and include the hashtags #Scouts4SDGs #ScoutsAustralia #SDG02 #ZeroHunger, and then head over to scout.org to register your project.
