Technology is constantly changing, cities are growing, and renewable energy is becoming more and more important. That’s why we need to always be innovative in planning for the future to make our societies inclusive for all.
With over half the world population now living in cities, mass transport and renewable energy are becoming ever more important, as are the growth of new industries and information and communication technologies. Technological progress is also key to finding lasting solutions to both economic and environmental challenges, such as providing new jobs and promoting energy efficiency. Promoting sustainable industries, and investing in scientific research and innovation, are all important ways to facilitate sustainable development. More than 4 billion people still do not have access to the Internet, and 90 percent are from the developing world. Bridging this digital divide is crucial to ensure equal access to information and knowledge, as well as foster innovation and entrepreneurship (UNDP).
Through our renewed program, we have a dedicated Special Interest Area in STEM and Innovation. We Recognise the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills for a sustainable future, and we have an outcome in our Sustainability Strategy & Action Plan that “youth members increase their passion for and knowledge of STEM”. Check out the resources below to learn more, take action, and then share to spread the word.
While we see much of the infrastructure that supports our everyday life (e.g. roads, hospitals), others like our water supply and many public services are not so visible. What do you know about this infrastructure, and the industries in your local area? What are the benefits we receive from these, and what innovations do they offer that support a sustainable community?
Scouts Australia’s youth program team have started developing ideas for how you might engage with each of the Sustainable Development Goals. This card challenges you to contribute to our global goal of Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Every small part counts as we work towards these goals!
