Meet Jordan

Meet Jordan, a Rover Scout from WA

A Rover Scout from Western Australia, and the current Chair of the WA Branch Rover Council.

Jordan started his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout and, progressed through each section, to take on the role of a Cub Scout leader and quickly undertaking his Adult Leader training. Jordan found an interest in having his skills and experience recognised shortly after receiving his Baden Powell Scout Award in 2020.

With a bit of spare time on his hands, he decided to work closely with his Branch Commissioner VET, Ann, to seek assessment for his skills in a number of qualifications that his pathways in the youth program and Adult Training & Development had supported him to attain. Whilst completing various qualifications through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training, Jordan has also been studying a double degree in Education and Science.

Jordan received his Advanced Diploma in Leadership and Management at the start of 2022 through his active involvement in Scouting which provided him with valuable on-the-job learning opportunities. Through his various roles within the organisation, Jordan was able to gain hands-on experience in leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making.

The key element of the Scout Method is ‘Learning By Doing’

We demonstrate this in our youth program across Australia. Jordan was able to put this principle into practice as he took on various responsibilities within the organisation. This hands-on approach to learning allowed him to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts and theories he was studying at University.

On-the-job learning and learning by doing are essential components of any comprehensive education. Jordan’s active involvement in Scouting provided him with valuable opportunities to apply this practise and knowledge to real-world projects. This type of experiential learning is crucial for developing the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world.

Jordan’s active involvement and leadership in Scouting, in addition to his formal education, helped him to develop a well-rounded set of skills and knowledge that will serve him well in his future endeavours. It also highlights the importance of hands-on learning and real-life experience in complementing classroom education. Jordan is our first Rover Scout to complete an Advanced Diploma in Leadership and Management. Certainly an achievement worth celebrating!
