UNESCO Annual World Day

for Glaciers

Scouts Australia Hosts Special Webinar for UNESCOs annual World Day for Glaciers as part of the international year of Glacier Preservation

World Day for Glaciers is observed on 21 March, marking a crucial milestone in global efforts to protect these essential water towers that provide freshwater to over 2 billion people worldwide. Glaciers are rapidly retreating due to climate change. The preservation of these crucial resources is essential not only for environmental sustainability, but also for economic stability and safeguarding cultural services and livelihoods.

To raise awareness and empower Scouts to learn more about the connection between glaciers and the roles they play in our environment, Scouts Australia is hosting a one-hour webinar featuring Scouts Australia Ambassadors and experienced polar explorers Dr. Gareth Andrews and Dr. Richard Stephenson. You may remember them from The Last Great First Expedition” (later known as Antarctica 2023).

They will share their insights on:

  • How Glaciers impact our world and water resources
  • Why their preservation matters
  • How glacier melt affects both our environment and our future
  • Connection to global issues like climate change and plastic pollution
  • Personal stories from their previous expeditions and plans for their 2025 expedition to the Northern Patagonian Ice Field

Additionally, the webinar will chat with a member from Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF) and their up coming LTAF trip to Patagonia in January 2026.

Members of Scouts Australia’s SDG Challenge team will also highlight sustainable habits to protect the environment and wildlife, building on the work Scouts have done toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and encourage Scouts to create their own SDG challenges to inspire change within their communities.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Scouts to learn about glaciers, climate change, and actionable steps they can take to protect the planet. Join us and be part of the movement for a sustainable future.
