A Journey of Exploration and Teamwork to Great Keppel Island

In December 2024, three Queensland Cub Scouts embarked on a three-day adventure to Great Keppel Island, thanks to the generous support of the Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund.

The Patrol’s journey began with a ferry ride from Rosslyn Bay Marina to Great Keppel Island. Upon arrival, the Patrol set out to hike to the island’s lighthouse -but soon discovered that maps aren’t always the most reliable tool. With guidance from their Group Leader, “Bear,” they learned how to track their progress by recording times and landmarks along the route. This method proved invaluable for safety and navigation.

The hike to the lighthouse was challenging, involving steep hills and loose rocks, but the Patrol kept spirits high by encouraging one another and taking regular breaks to stay hydrated on a very hot day. Although the map suggested a 15.8 km circuit, the Scouts estimated they covered approximately 20 km in total. While the lighthouse itself was smaller than expected, they enjoyed a well-earned lunch with a stunning view before heading back – motivated by the thought of ice cream at base camp!

Exploring the Ocean

The next day, the Patrol traded hiking boots for flippers as they headed out with Keppel Dive Water Sports to snorkel at Secret Cove. Before entering the water, they received a safety briefing on using hand signals to communicate underwater.

The Scouts spent about an hour snorkelling, where they were thrilled to spot a lemon shark and observe a variety of marine life. During the experience, they also recorded coral species and colour gradients -valuable data to be shared with the Coral Watch Group.

After returning from the snorkelling trip, the Patrol enjoyed wraps and poppers for lunch, followed by games in the shade to cool down. Later in the afternoon, they participated in a beach clean-up along Putney Beach. Though disheartened by the amount of rubbish they found, the Scouts were proud to contribute to protecting the environment.

Kayaking and Reflection

On the final day, the Scouts took to the water once more—this time in kayaks. After gearing up with personal flotation devices and paddles, and receiving a safety briefing, they launched from Fisherman Beach. While launching in the shallow, wavy water proved a bit tricky, the Scouts worked together to help each other on board.

The group paddled all the way to Monkey Beach, spotting coral reefs and marine life along the way. There, they enjoyed a supervised swim before returning to Fisherman Beach, where they cleaned and packed away the kayaks.

After lunch, the Patrol reflected on their unforgettable journey – filled with learning, teamwork, resilience, and fun. It was an adventure that offered not only outdoor challenges but also personal growth and memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you, Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund for the grant that made this incredible experience possible.

A special thank you goes to Owl, a Joey Scout Leader, who generously donated towards the Patrol’s meals – giving one Cub Scout the opportunity to try salmon for the very first time, a memory he’ll always treasure.

Lastly, sincere thanks to the Leaders and adult helpers who guided and supported the Patrol throughout this journey. Your encouragement and care helped turn an adventure into a lasting life lesson.
