Early in 2024, a dedicated New South Wales dedicated Venturer Scout – Sidney, participated in an eight-day outdoor adventure camp at Cottermouth, ACT, supported by Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund.
The Cottermouth camp offers an array of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, camping, whitewater rafting, horse riding, and mountain biking. This was not Sidney’s first experience at the camp -she first attended exactly a year ago, where she earned her Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation through the Scout Australia Institute of Training (SAIT).
Returning this year, Sidney set her sights on a new and ambitious goal: obtaining her Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership. “It’s easier said than done,” Sidney shared. Not only did she need to prepare both mentally and physically for the demanding program, she also had to plan and undertake a self-sufficient three-day hike as her major activity. This included developing a comprehensive meal and hydration plan, as well as carrying all food, water, and camping gear required for the journey.
Reflecting on her time at camp, Sidney noted, “There were definitely differences and moments of conflict that we had to work through as a group. Whether it was during group study sessions for our certificate, working toward the goals we set at the beginning of camp, or especially during the three-day hike, it was crucial that we supported and encouraged one another throughout the entire experience. Looking back, this camp really taught me how important it is to approach things from different perspectives – how to achieve a goal not just individually, but as a team. I learned how to collaborate with others, even when we had different ideas or approaches. These are all invaluable leadership skills I’ve gained from the camp.”
The camp not only enhanced Sidney’s outdoor recreation skills and leadership capabilities, but also offered valuable personal growth. A highlight for her was reuniting with friends from the previous year as well as made new friendship with new participants.
