In January 2025, a patrol of eight Rover Scouts from three different New South Wales Rover Units set out to explore the famous Overland Track in Tasmania. This expedition aimed for the Patrol to explore alpine areas, experience the wildlife and environment, and develop an understanding of the importance of protecting and respecting these unique landscapes, while further developing the Patrol’s hiking skills.
The expedition also included a visit to Hobart, where the Patrol stayed, explored the CBD, and experienced the local culture, gaining an appreciation of how Tasmania differs from Sydney and other Australian cities.
During the eight-day hike, the Patrol summited several iconic mountains, including Cradle Mountain, Mt Ossa, Mt Oakleigh, and The Labyrinth. Along the way, they advanced their outdoor recreation skills and learned vital skills to sustain themselves throughout a long journey. These included hygiene, hydration, food preparation, foot care, and sun safety.
The expedition provided many opportunities for all Patrol members to develop Leadership skills through sharing hiking experiences and Leading in different parts of the terrain. The Patrol supported one another throughout the journey, gaining experience in hiking and guiding, Leading the Patrol through varying terrains, navigation and route planning, trip preparation and logistics, communication with participants and parents, and ensuring the care and wellbeing of all Patrol members.
Responsible risk-taking was another key element of the journey. The Patrol demonstrated this through managing financial planning and transport arrangements, preparing extensive risk assessments and emergency plans, recognising potential hazards such as snakes and using protective equipment like gaiters, carrying essential emergency gear for first aid and hypothermia prevention, and obtaining first aid certification prior to departure. These practices ensured the safety of all participants while allowing everyone to challenge themselves in a controlled and thoughtful way.
The expedition was an extraordinary opportunity, made possible thanks to the generosity of Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund (LTAF). The Patrol would like to extend their gratitude to their Group Leader, the LTAF committee, and everyone who assisted in making this expedition possible.
