During winter 2024, three Queensland Rover Scouts embarked on a eight-day alpine journey to Mt Hotham, Victoria. The resort sitting high among the mountain peaks at 1,750m, and is known for its cold alpine conditions, with average temperatures around 5°C.
Planning and preparation were key parts of the expedition. The Patrol Leader explained, “Mapping out the itinerary, understanding the requirements for undertaking Alpine OAS activities, and researching the resort’s conditions were all vital steps. Creating a budget, sourcing the right gear, and organising other necessities really pushed me outside my comfort zone.”
During the trip, the Patrol undertook multiple ski lessons, building their ability to ski safely on slopes. “We all progressed and advanced our skills,” Patrol Leader, Sarah shared. Beyond skiing, the team also learnt essential alpine skills such as correctly fitting snow chains and driving carefully in icy conditions. “Most importantly, we learnt how to stop safely, allow traffic to pass, and travel up and down the mountain with caution,” Sarah added.
The expedition was supported by the Dick and Pip Smith – Leadership Through Adventure Fund, which provided financial assistance to make the journey possible. This opportunity allowed the Patrol to gain valuable alpine experience, increase their confidence, and develop practical skills.
As well as learning how to ski, the team discovered the importance of dressing appropriately for alpine conditions, staying hydrated, caring for their equipment, and recognising the difference in how the body feels temperature in sunlight compared to after sunset.
Above all, the Patrol had fun, strengthened their teamwork, and built lifelong skills through this alpine adventure.
