Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT)

Empowering Your Personal Development and Scouting Journey

The Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT) RTO 5443 empowers Scouts to transform their Scouting experiences into nationally recognised qualifications, creating pathways for continued leadership development, personal growth, and career opportunities.

We spoke with two Rover Scouts, Claire and Chloe from Scouts WA, who were eager to continue developing their leadership and project management capabilities.

Having previously completed two SAIT qualifications, Chloe was inspired by the personal and professional value these experiences provided and wanted to continue strengthening her leadership skills. Following the completion of her Wood Badge training, Claire was looking for a new challenge and a structured pathway to further develop her leadership, project management, and people management capabilities.

Together, they saw that SAIT offered a Diploma of Leadership and Management which was an opportunity to challenge themselves, continue learning, and enhance their ability to support young people and fellow volunteers through effective leadership. The qualification also provided formal recognition of the skills and experience they had developed through their Scouting journeys.

How Does Scouting Support Their Learning Journey?

Scouting played an important role in supporting Claire and Chloe’s learning journey throughout the Diploma of Leadership and Management. The many opportunities available within Scouts provided practical, real-world experiences that aligned closely with the competencies covered throughout the qualification.

Through Chole’s roles as a Scout Leader, Rover Unit Leader, member of the Branch Youth Council, and former Training and Development Officer on the Scouts WA Rover Council, she developed strong experience in leadership, mentoring, project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and volunteer development.

These experiences allowed Chloe to apply leadership theory in meaningful situations while providing evidence of the skills and capabilities required throughout the Diploma.

Similarly, Claire’s roles as Branch Commissioner Media, Cub Scout Leader, and former Chairperson of the Scouts WA Rover Council provided opportunities to lead teams, manage projects, develop communication strategies, and collaborate across different areas of the organisation.

Together, their varied Scouting experiences provided opportunities to lead events, support volunteers, contribute to projects, and play an active role in the wider direction of Scouting in Western Australia. These practical leadership opportunities helped connect the learning theory with real-life experiences, making the qualification both relevant and valuable.

Engagement and Support

Completing the Diploma together allowed Claire and Chloe to support each other throughout the qualification. By discussing assessments, sharing ideas, and drawing on their Scouting experiences, they were able to strengthen their understanding and apply their learning in practical ways.

Balancing study alongside work and Scouting commitments was made easier through regular encouragement, accountability, and collaboration. Their shared learning experience not only helped them successfully complete the qualification but also reinforced the teamwork and leadership values that are central to Scouting.

Benefits for the Future

The Diploma of Leadership and Management has provided Claire and Chloe with a strong foundation in leadership, communication, and project management. Through the qualification, they have strengthened their ability to lead teams, manage projects, engage with stakeholders, and confidently navigate complex situations.

The Diploma has also provided formal recognition of the valuable leadership skills they have developed through Scouting, increasing their confidence in both volunteer and professional environments.

The skills gained through the qualification will continue to support them as they take on future leadership opportunities, contribute to projects, and continue making a positive impact within the Scouting community.

What’s Next?

Following the successful completion of the Diploma, Claire and Chloe are continuing to build on their leadership journeys within Scouting.

They look forward to applying the knowledge and skills gained through the qualification by supporting events, leading teams, and contributing to projects across Scouts WA. They also plan to continue their professional development by progressing through the vocational education pathway towards the Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management.

Alongside this, they are continuing their Rover Scout development by working towards completing their Axe and Log, further challenging themselves and growing as leaders within the movement.

For both Claire and Chloe, completing the Diploma represents an important milestone and a strong foundation for continued personal, professional, and leadership growth.

Would They Recommend It?

Claire and Chloe would highly recommend the SAIT Diploma of Leadership and Management to Rover Scouts, adult Leaders, and adult Helpers looking to further develop and recognise their leadership skills.

The qualification provides a valuable opportunity to formally recognise the leadership, project management, and people management capabilities that many Scout members develop through their involvement in Scouting.

Much of the course content connects directly with real Scouting experiences, including leading teams, managing projects, delivering events, and supporting volunteers. Combining practical Scouting experience with structured learning makes the qualification relevant, engaging, and applicable in both volunteer and professional settings.

For Rover Scouts especially, the Diploma provides an opportunity to recognise the leadership experience they have developed over time while opening pathways for future education and career development. It also provides the confidence and professional language needed to communicate the skills gained through Scouting.

Throughout the qualification, SAIT provides a positive and supportive learning environment, with experienced assessors offering guidance and constructive feedback to help participants demonstrate their capabilities and successfully complete the requirements.

With a range of nationally recognised qualifications available, SAIT provides meaningful pathways for both youth and adult members to continue developing their skills while strengthening their contribution to the Scouting movement.
