Sustainable Development Goals

SDG4 – Quality Education

Education can be the key that opens the door to a lifetime of opportunity, but only if everyone has access to lifelong learning opportunities, whether inside or outside of school.

Since 2000, there has been enormous progress in achieving the target of universal primary education. The total enrolment rate in developing regions reached 91 percent in 2015, and the worldwide number of children out of school has dropped by almost half. There has also been a dramatic increase in literacy rates, and many more girls are in school than ever before. These are all remarkable successes (UNDP).

Quality education is a huge part of Scouting – we are one of the leading non-formal educational movements in the world! One of the outcomes we’re aiming for through our Sustainability Strategy & Action Plan is “our method and program delivers quality non-formal education”. The recent Youth Program Review included a lot of work to deliver on this, ensuring we are delivering quality programs that are adventurous, fun, challenging and inclusive. Check out the resources below to learn more about this SDG, take action, and then share to spread the word.

Learn More and Take Action

How can you contribute to Quality Education with the skills and knowledge you have?

The year 2020 has seen education, globally, rapidly change shape, and Australia is not immune to this. Remote and online learning has moved from minority experiences, to looking like it is the primary delivery model for Term 2 in Australian schools. Similarly, Scouting is an educational movement. We work towards educational objectives, have strong links to the Australian Curriculum and provide Vocational Education and Training outcomes through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT), our Registered Training Organisation (RTO: 5443). We all continue to operate outside of a face-to-face delivery model, using electronic means to stay connected. As an organisation, and a movement, we contribute to the global goal of Quality Education

Scouts Australia’s youth program team have started developing ideas for how you might engage with each of the Sustainable Development Goals. This card challenges you to contribute to our global goal of Quality Education by considering learning resources for those who speak languages other than your own. Is this that you are fluent in Japanese, Mandarin, Arabic, French, German, Italian, or one of the many other languages in our community, and will create a resource to share with your Scouting friends to learn your language? Maybe you would like to consider developing a resource to teach others particular skills? The decision is yours! Every small part counts as we work towards these goals!

Share Your Efforts

Now that you’ve taken action, share it to inspire others. If you post to social media, please tag Scouts Australia and include the hashtags #Scouts4SDGs #ScoutsAustralia #SDG04 #QualityEducation, and then head over to scout.org to register your project.
