Creating a Better World

Imagine the impact of 50 million Scouts working as active citizens to leave this world a little better than we found it – that’s the power of Scouts for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!

World Scouting has been on the front lines of creating a better world for over a century, doing our bit to address inequality and support a thriving environment. We have an action-oriented approach to education, designed to equip our members with the skills to be active citizens and contribute to sustainable development.

In 2015 the United Nations launched the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (the SDGs) – 17 goals driving for improved social, economic and environmental sustainability by 2030. Scouting was there when the SDGs were launched; we have a history of contributing to improving the sustainability of our planet, promote peace, and tackle inequality, with over one billion hours towards sustainable development through initiatives under the Better World Framework (including the World Scout Environment Programme, Messengers of Peace and the Scouts of the World Award.)

In late 2018, we took that commitment one step further with Scouts for SDGs (#Scouts4SDGs), mobilising millions of Scouts to make the world’s largest coordinated youth contribution to the SDGs by 2030 (through two million local projects and an additional three billion hours of service).

This is just one part of the way we can support #Scouts4SDGs across Australia. We are also developing pages with more information, stories and activities so you can engage more with each of the SDGs. Follow the links to learn more about each SDG, take action, and then share what you have done to inspire others.

For almost two years, Scouts Australia worked on a strategy that built on our successes in sustainability, worked out where we can do better, and mapped out a plan to help us reach these objectives. This Sustainability Strategy & Action Plan was approved at the National Operations Committee in April 2019.

We need to work together to achieve these goals, and there are different ways we can all take part; check out the Strategy page to learn more.
